Building Information

Location: Ottawa, Ontario

Building Use: Conversion, Religious Centre to Residential

Year Built: 1915

Number of Buildings: 1

The project analyzed a historic religious center in Ottawa, Ontario being converted into a residential building that will provide conveniently located and cost-effective housing. To complete the conversion, the owners are renovating the existing building and adding an extension which includes new amenities. The owners of this 4-storey 1915 building would like to reduce the operational energy use GHG emissions as much as possible while ensuring benefits outweigh costs. To maximize their budget for GHG emissions reductions, the owners pursued several funding programs, including CMHC MLI Select, CIB, BMO, ITC, and the CAGBC Zero Carbon Building certification.

Challenge

The owners targeted not one but several funding programs and wanted the design to cater to all of their stringent requirements in order to maximize the funding. A traditional approach would involve addressing each funding program individually that could take several months and complex manual calculations and reassessments.

Summary of Targets

The project scope included reducing operational energy and emissions, performing lifecycle costing and cost-benefit assessments, and ensuring compliance with various funding programs and certifications. The owners were motivated by the need to maximize eligibility for green building funding while minimizing costs.
